• **All students must have their SSN on file with the University**

    I. Apply for VA Education Benefits

    • You can apply for VA education benefits at www.va.gov website.
    • Explore Benefits >> Education & Training >> Apply Now >> follow the on-screen instructions. Select VA Form 22-1990 to apply for the GI Bill Education Benefits:
      • Post 9/11-Chapter 33. Students who receive 100% benefits coverage from the VA qualify for participation in the LMU Yellow Ribbon Program.
      • Montgomery GI Bill-Chapter 30 and Chapter 1606: Scan and save the DD-Form 214 Member 4 (Chapter 30 & 33) or DD Form 2384 (Chapter 1606) as a PDF to be attached to the VA Form 22-1990.
      • When filling out your application, we strongly advise that you sign up for direct deposit. Electronic fund transfers (EFT) are the quickest way to receive your book stipend and housing allowance payments. If you don’t sign up for direct deposit, you will receive paper checks in the mail.
      • LMU does not process book stipends or housing allowance. You must contact the VA directly for that information.
    • If you have questions about your VA education benefits or any other questions, you may contact them at: VA Regional Office Telephone: (888) 442-4551 Website:  www.va.gov

After the VA receives your application, they will review it and determine your eligibility for VA Educational benefits. The VA will mail you a Certificate of Eligibility detailing your eligibility (usually within 6-8 weeks) which you will need to submit to our office.

    • If you mail a hard-copy application for VA Educational benefits:
      • Make a copy of your application before mailing it to the VA.
    • If you used www.vets.gov to electronically apply for VA Educational benefits:
      • Print your confirmation page once you complete the application.

II. Be accepted by and commit to LMU

    • LMU Admissions accepts you into a degree-seeking program, and you commit to the university.
    • Register for courses at the designated time. (Students who are veterans of a service receive priority registration.)
    • See  on submitting the Semester Benefits Enrollment Form

Download the single-page PDF LMU VA Information Sheet.

    III. Submit the following documentation

All students must submit documentation to LMU's VA Certification Office. You do not need to be registered to send the COE. New students submit a recent COE or VA-authorized replacement: The COE states the time and percentage of educational benefits.

    • Students using the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit may print this from their eBenefits account. This must show the time and percentage of benefits coverage.
    • Chapter 31 students will have the electronic authorization sent to LMU by their VR&E counselor.
    • For Chapter 35 recipients: LMU must have a copy of your COE and the sponsor’s Social Security Number before we can process any benefits.

      • All GI Bill (Chapter 33) recipients: VA Form 22-1995 Change of Program or Place of Training
      • Chapter 35, 1606, or the Fry Scholarship recipients: VA Form 22-5495 Change of Program or Place of Training

  • There are a few items to which all continuing students must adhere. Before the start of the next semester, make sure that:

    • You have not exhausted your eligibility benefits. Only the VA can verify this, LMU cannot. Eligibility certificates can be obtained here: https://www.va.gov/education/gi-bill/post-9-11/ch-33-benefit/
    • You must be registered in the next term to submit the (SBE) form, and submit the form for each registered semester in which will use your VA benefits.
    • If you are using the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapters 33/33YR) you must attach an up-to-date Certificate of Eligibility or Statement of Benefits to the SBE form.
